“Special arts” project training activity in Ghilarza, Sardinia

The new year kicked off with the second part of the “Special Arts” project, where we were exploring ways to include children with disabilities and support them on the path of learning and growth through art.
From January 12 to 17, the CUBUFO team, together with representatives from three Bulgarian schools – Prof. Dr. Ivan Shishmanov Specialized Secondary School for Visually-Impaired Children in Varna, Vicho Gruncharov Secondary School in Gorna Oryahovitsa, and Louis Braille Specialized Secondary School for Visually Impaired Children in Sofia – took part in a study visit to Ghilarza, Sardinia. There, alongside our partners from Le Voci Di Astarte and experts Ina Gerginova-Evtimova and Sara Capanna, we had the chance to learn, create, and grow together.
Every morning started with movement and theatre sessions. Through various techniques we worked on several directions at once: enriching emotional culture, deeper self-awareness, freer self-expression. We practiced finding comfort, calm, and control even in the most unexpected life situations. And most importantly – we gained practical tools to make communication more meaningful, vibrant, and truly spontaneous. The students from Gorna Oryahovitsa and Sofia created drawings on their own and took part in making collages.
In the afternoons local children joined in, diving into the world of art and dance together with their Bulgarian peers. Under the skilled guidance of Ina, Sara, and Gloria Uccheddu, in just a couple of days they created a performance that was presented to us and the parents.
On two evenings we connected with the local community: learned traditional Sardinian dances, tasted local dishes, discovered fascinating facts about the culture, and even tried on typical regional costumes.
On our last evening in Ghilarza we joined the celebrations for Saint Anthony’s Day – the whole town gathered around specially lit bonfires to celebrate.
The week flew by. We returned to Bulgaria full of positive energy, new friendships, fresh ideas, and warm memories of the hospitality of the local people.
Big thanks to all participants and our wonderful hosts in Sardinia for giving the children the chance to experience art without borders.
